Guy began his career with the San Jose Police Department in 1979. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1996 and to Lieutenant in 2004. He worked the FTO Program both as an officer and as a supervisor, the Violent Crimes Team (Gang Investigations Unit), the Training Unit as a CPT instructor, Research & Development Unit and he was the Program Manager for the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI).

 

Guy attended Sacred Heart High School where he played football, baseball and tennis. He went on to attend College of San Francisco where he was a member of the Ram Ski Club and he competed on their recreational race team. He also attended California State University, Sacramento. There he participated in intramural sports including baseball, co-ed softball as well as Adult League softball in the Sacramento area.

 

Guy was a member of the SJPD Men’s Slow-Pitch Softball Team. During the early and mid 80s, Guy was a member of the San Jose Police Choirboys Football Team. In 1986, Guy along with several other members of the department started the San Jose PD Ski Team, “Team San Jose.” For more than 20 years, Guy was a board member and Vice-President of the Ski Team. Guy and the Ski Team not only competed in the California Police Winter Games but also competed in North American Police Skiing Championships in Colorado and the International Police Winter Games (IPWG). The IPWG were held in various locations throughout the world including Davos, Switzerland, Whistler/Blackcomb, British Colombia and numerous skiing venues in the Lake Tahoe area of California. Guy and Team San Jose’s crowning moment at the International Police Winter Games was in 1995. The Team represented by Guy and four other team members captured the most medal points and were awarded the Gold Medal and trophy as the “Top Team in the World” that year. Guy was also a member of the San Jose Blues Ice Hockey and Roller Hockey Teams. Guy also participated in the Caldarulo Cup ice hockey games against the San Jose Fire Department.

 

Guy’s personal accomplishments on the ski slopes included being awarded:

  • 4 Gold Medals

  • 3 Silver Medals

  • 15 Bronze Medals

 

Guy won these medals while competing in Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super Slalom against some of the best law enforcement officers in the world.

 

For his outstanding athletic accomplishments, Lt. Guy Bernardo is inducted into the Police Amateur Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame.
